Board

 


TRAF is governed by a Board which oversees its operations. The Board acts as trustee of the Fund and is ultimately responsible for the proper administration of The Teachers' Pensions Act. Additional details regarding the function of the Board are set out in its Terms of Reference.

The Board is comprised of nine members – three nominated by The Manitoba Teachers' Society (MTS), one nominated by the Retired Teachers' Association of Manitoba (RTAM) and five from the general public. These representatives are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. 

The current members of the Board, and their appointment dates, are set out below. All members shall continue to hold office after the expiry of their term until re-appointment or a successor is appointed.

Bryton Moen is a Crown Attorney with Manitoba Justice. In that role, he has prosecuted a variety of different matters throughout the Province of Manitoba. He has also been Co-Counsel to several inquests.

Bryton earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Manitoba, and his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Brandon University.   

Bryton is active in a variety of different professional organizations, presently serving as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Manitoba Bar Association, and as a member of the Manitoba Federal Judicial Advisory Committee. He also previously served on the Investment Committee for the Law Society of Manitoba.

He has also been involved in a variety of different community organizations. He currently serves as a Director for the Victoria General Hospital Foundation, and previously served the Canadian Sport Centre Manitoba, multiple committees of the Law Society of Manitoba (Practice & Ethics; Admission & Education; Admissions & Education Appeals and Trust Safety Appeals Sub-Committee), Brandon University Alumni Association and the Brandon & District United Way, where he served as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance & Audit Committee.

Bryton has received the Section Activity Award from the Manitoba Bar Association and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal from the Government of Manitoba. In the past, he has received the Council Member Award from the Manitoba Bar Association and the Distinguished Alumni Award for Community Service from Brandon University.



James Bedford, Vice Chair

Term expires December 31, 2022*

James is currently the President of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society. Prior to his election as President, he served as Vice President of the Society and, before that, as a high school science and mathematics teachers in the Louis Riel, St. Boniface and Norwood School Divisions. He has served as President of the St. Boniface Teachers’ Association and as a Vice President of the Louis Riel Teachers’ Association. James has also served as the Chief Governance Officer and Chair of the Disability Benefits Plan of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society.

James received a Bachelor of Science (4-year) degree from the University of Winnipeg, a Master of Science (Health and Radiation Physics) degree from McMaster University and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Winnipeg.



2022 Myrna WiebeMyrna Wiebe

Myrna has more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. She is currently the Chief Strategy and Information Officer for Access Credit Union Limited. As a member of the executive team at Access, she is heavily involved in the development and execution of corporate strategy and board governance. Myrna also oversees the information technology and security and business integration functions for Access.

Myrna has completed the Institute of Corporate Directors - Rotman Director Education Program, IFIC Mutual Funds License, Canadian Securities Course and Certified Financial Planning designation. Her education also includes completing the Certificate in Management program at the University of Manitoba, and Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Management and Masters in Business Administration through Athabasca University. 

Myrna has been actively involved in a variety of volunteer organization boards, and currently serves on the Host Committee for Curl Manitoba Scotties 2024 and has previously served on the South Central Cancer Resource Board. She also served on the Host Committee for Hockey Canada's 2019 National Women’s Under 18 Championship event.

Brenda has over 20 years of business experience, mainly focused on risk management. Her current role is Director of Risk Management for Ironclad Developments Inc. She is responsible for managing all aspects of the organization's insurance and claims, risk profile and business continuity plan, as well as assisting in financing and investment activities.

Prior to surety, Brenda spent 10 years in mid-market commercial banking where she managed banking relationships, structured financing solutions, and brought in appropriate banking partners for mid-market corporations. Brenda has also led surety bond practices at HUB International and practiced cross-border taxation at Deloitte and Arthur Andersen. She has both a Bachelor of Accountancy and a Master of Business Administration from the University of North Dakota as well as a Certified Public Accountant designation. Brenda has also completed the Institute of Corporate Directors – Rotman Director Education Program. 

Brenda has participated on boards and chaired committees focused mainly on children, health, and education.

Glen is currently the Benefit Plans and Programs Officer with The Manitoba Teachers' Society where he oversees the various benefit plans that The Manitoba Teachers' Society holds. Formerly, he was a teacher in the River East Transcona School Division, and served as President of the former River East Teachers' Association.

Glen received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Winnipeg and his certificate of Education from the University of Manitoba.


 
Tammy Hodgins Rector WebTammy Hodgins-Rector

Term expires December 31, 2022*

Tammy is a counsellor at Sanford Collegiate in the Red River Valley School Division. She has been an active member of the Red River Valley Teachers' Association since 1998 and has served in various capacities, including: President, Past President and Collective Bargaining Chairperson. She is currently the Workplace Safety and Health Chairperson.

Tammy has served on several provincial committees related to education, finance, collective bargaining and teacher certification.

Tammy received her Bachelor of Education (1996) from the University of Winnipeg and her School Administrator's Certificate in 2004.

Nike is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) with more than 20 years of professional accounting experience in Chief Financial Officer, Finance Director and Controller roles at organizations including Macdonald Youth Services, Economic Development Winnipeg, Pfizer Inc., Microsoft Ireland Operations, Xerox Europe Ltd. and Marks & Spencer.

Nike is the President of Olanike Bello CPA, a public accounting firm. She is also the co-owner of a UPS Store franchise in Winnipeg. 

Nike serves on ACCA Canada as a network panel member, and is a council member of Ka Ni Kanichihk and member of the Associates of the Asper School of Business.

She was the Treasurer of the Board at St. John's-Ravenscourt School Parents' Association and Com-Spam Inc. and Chair of the Finance Committee of the Manitoba 150 Host Committee Inc.

Nike holds a Master of Business Administration from Oxford Brookes University (UK) and four professional accounting designations – Chartered Accountant (CA - IFAC), Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA - Europe), Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA - Canada) and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE - North America).
